This award recognizes outstanding efforts to implement open science practices within a BHI program. The Award is based on demonstrated commitment to the six BHI-mandated open science practices. The BHI Open Science Award recognizes outstanding contributions to advancing open science practices within their research project. BHI researchers and/or teams engaged in the promotion and implementation of open science are encouraged to self-nominate.

Workshop: practical approaches to de-identification of medical imaging data: from metadata to pixel-level protection
The workshop highlighted real-world examples and introduced tools and workflows used to ensure compliance with privacy regulations. Topics included metadata anonymization, handling of burned-in text in ultrasound and other modalities, and defacing techniques for 3D imaging data. The session was designed to be accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Intellectual Property, Innovation, and Open Science Presentation
This lecture on the intersection of Intellectual Property and Open Science was given by Dr. Richard Gold at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on March 26th, 2025. Dr. Richard Gold is the Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy at McGill University.
Dr. Gold spoke about ways to balance sharing and patenting to maximize patient benefits from research. He challenged common misconceptions about patents and spoke on the best pathways for researchers to achieve their goals.

Building Community to Support Data Sharing in Health Research Event
This one-day workshop at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute targeted privacy specialists, institutional legal teams, Research Ethics Boards (REB) members, research integrity offices, science policy specialists, and researchers interested in understanding pathways to foster data sharing in medicine.
The goal of the workshop was to learn, discuss and build community among experts and professionals working in research ethics, privacy, and open science spaces around best practices to support health research data sharing.
